MQ Series Gas Sensor Modules – MQ2 to MQ9
The MQ Series is a family of semiconductor gas sensors designed to detect different gases and vapours using a heated metal-oxide sensing element. Each model is formulated to provide higher sensitivity toward particular gases, making the MQ2–MQ9 range useful for a variety of gas-detection and environmental monitoring projects.
```
MQ2: Suitable for detecting combustible gases and smoke, with sensitivity to gases such as LPG, methane, propane and hydrogen, as well as alcohol vapour and carbon monoxide.
MQ3: Primarily intended for alcohol vapour detection, making it suitable for alcohol sensing and breath-related experimental projects.
MQ4: Primarily suited to methane and natural-gas detection.
MQ5: Designed for LPG, natural gas and town/coal gas detection.
MQ6: Optimized primarily for LPG, with strong response to propane and butane.
MQ7: Designed specifically for carbon monoxide (CO) detection.
MQ8: Designed primarily for hydrogen gas detection.
MQ9: Designed to detect carbon monoxide together with combustible gases such as methane and LPG.
MQ sensors provide an electrical response that changes with the concentration of the target gas. They are commonly connected to a microcontroller's analog input for monitoring, threshold detection and software-based processing. Proper heater operation, warm-up time and calibration are important for obtaining useful results.
These sensors are well suited to educational electronics, gas-leak detection prototypes, environmental experiments, automation, robotics and IoT projects. Because MQ sensors have cross-sensitivity to multiple gases and their response depends on environmental conditions, they should be used for indicative detection and measurement rather than as certified gas-safety instruments.
