CCS811 Digital Gas & Air Quality Sensor

The CCS811 is a compact digital gas sensor designed primarily for indoor air-quality monitoring. It uses a heated metal-oxide (MOX) sensing element to detect a broad range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the surrounding air and provides processed air-quality readings through its digital interface.

The sensor reports Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) and equivalent carbon dioxide (eCO2) values. The eCO2 value is an estimated equivalent CO₂ level derived from the sensor's gas response and should not be treated as a direct measurement of atmospheric CO₂ concentration. The sensor responds to groups of compounds including alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, organic acids, amines and hydrocarbons.

Communication is provided through an I2C interface, making the CCS811 straightforward to integrate with Arduino, ESP32 and other compatible microcontroller platforms. The device supports configurable measurement modes and an interrupt function for data-ready or threshold events.

The CCS811 requires an initial burn-in period and a stabilization period after extended inactivity for best results. Calibration and environmental compensation are also important when greater measurement consistency is required.
