4x4 Matrix Keyboard – Membrane & Plastic Variants
The 4x4 Matrix Keyboard is a compact 16-key input device designed for adding a numeric and command keypad to electronic projects. Its keys are arranged in a matrix of four rows and four columns, allowing all 16 buttons to be monitored using only eight signal lines.
The keypad is available in two common versions. The membrane version uses a thin flexible overlay and is lightweight and easy to mount, making it suitable for compact electronics and development projects. The plastic version uses individual plastic keys and provides a more traditional keypad feel for applications requiring frequent physical interaction.
A microcontroller scans the rows and columns to determine which key has been pressed. This makes the keypad simple to interface with Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi and other digital controller platforms using suitable GPIO pins and keypad-scanning software.
The 4x4 keypad is commonly used for password locks, access-control systems, menu navigation, calculators, vending systems, alarm panels, automation equipment and general embedded user interfaces.
